If you enjoy slopes, you’ll love Showdown Mountain, Montana’s first ski hill. The mountain has trails for every skill level and is located less than an hour away.

Cross Country Skiing and Snow Shoeing

Silver Crest Trails in the Lewis and Clark National Forest is home to miles of trails perfect for cross country skiing and snow shoeing. Strap on your favorite footwear, pack a bag with all you need for the trip, and enjoy the wintry landscape.

Black bears and elk are often spotted here, as are migratory birds from Canada. You can also travel down trails that the famed Lewis and Clark used on their expedition.

Old Morony Town Site

The Old Morony Town Site is 15 miles from Great Falls. Explore the 3.6-mile trail through prairies and over rivers to Sulphur Springs. This mineral spring was said to cure Lewis and Clark’s friend Sacagawea when he fell ill. Take a dip and see its healing properties firsthand.

Great Falls Symphony

Not every winter adventure needs to be outdoor. Come inside and watch the Great Falls Symphony Orchestra perform. December features shows such as Winterscapes, performed by the Great Falls Symphony and the Symphonic Choir.

Queen of the Night headlines the Symphony’s January calendar. Let Mozart and the Soprano virtuoso Caitlin Cisler take you on a fairy tale journey through the bygone nights of yore.

February at the Great Falls Symphony features cellist Inbal Segev in her Cafe Noir show. Born in Israel, Segev came to America at 16 years old to continue her studies. She will perform hits by Kabalevsky and Shostakovich in this intimate performance.

The Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center

This is an activity the whole family will enjoy (and especially the history buffs). Dubbed the Crown Jewel of the Lewis & Clark Trail, the Interpretive Center is full of historical artifacts from the famous expedition.

Relive the amazing 8,000-mile journey by these two indomitable explorers as they sought a water passage to the northwest. The Interpretive Center is full of interactive exhibits and video and audio reproductions of events. You can also learn about the Plains and Northwest Indians and their role in the expedition.

The kids can enjoy the Junior Explorer Program full of educational opportunities for grades K-12. The program runs from October through May. Participation is by reservation only.

The Center also features special events such as December’s Trim the Tree, where families are invited to attend the decorating of the Christmas tree. Participants will also craft an ornament to adorn the tree and two ornaments to take home with them.
